Margo Fiddes is an exciting quilt artist who does not fit easily
into any category. Her background as a painter is evident in her
work. The subjects of her work are often the things she loves -
family, place, flowers. However, as soon as I think I know what
Margo does, she surprises me. I always want to see more of her work. |
She is quiet and unassuming, yet she displays strength and independence
in her work. Margo is disciplined in her approach to her art. She
once commented on how quickly her days in the studio go by. Her
commitment to her work is evident in its evolution. I believe she
is a person to watch. I am very pleased to introduce you to my friend
and colleague Margo Fiddes.

Margo Fiddes - Artist statement:
The beginnings of my art lie primarily in watercolour painting.
I took my first quilting course in 1991 but it wasn’t until
ten years later when I was working on a quilt I had designed wholly
by myself that I felt those same inner stirrings that I would sometimes
get when I painted. It was at this point that the idea emerged for
me to pursue my quilting more earnestly, as art.
I believe that my quilt art rests somewhere between the realistic
and the abstract. I am drawn to realistic images - nature, figures
- often very pictorial images.
Yet within my quilts I work to create contrast: contrast in colour
and value, contrast in shape and size, contrast in pattern; I love
the movement it creates within my pieces. The world as I see it
is made up of ever-changing images, it is this movement I try to
capture in my art.
