Cathy Tomm

I am pleased to introduce my friend Cathy Tomm. Cathy is an extraordinary young woman. She is a professional long-arm quilter with a thriving business. She is also the mother of young children, a gardener and an accomplished horsewoman. Yet she still finds time to make fabric and create exceptional original designs. Her finest work is deeply rooted in traditional quilting, but interpreted in a contemporary fashion. She uses simple
repeating patterns, strong colours and dynamic quilting to create strong, vibrant works of art. It is no surprise that Cathy has won many awards for her quilts. I hope you will enjoy seeing some of Cathy's wonderful work.

Cathy Tomm - Artist statement:
My first Studio Art Class was like Summer Camp with homework. I continued to take painting classes continued until I discovered quilting in 1995. I began by making traditional pieced quilts, but soon found myself creating my own Art Quilt designs, as well as creating my own fabric. Fabric is the main ingredient to my artwork, and I love to mix rich colors that flow and illuminate across the surface. Experimenting with simple shapes and color help me work through my days, whether it be waiting for spring gardening, or teaching my children the names of colors and shapes. A strong graphic repeating element is evident in many of my pieces, and I also love to mix organic fabrics with complex organic quilting lines. As a master of machine quilting techniques, I chooses the important added texture with care. Free roaming quilting lines add to the richness and individuality of each piece.

Statement: Mary highly recommended taking a class from Nancy Crow and so I did in March of 2004. Nancy introduced us to the work of Anna William. After taking the class I had to make a quilt that had some of Anna’s “Stripes”, where not all lines are straight. The changes in width add to it and play with the eye. I was so excited I had this quilt totally completed in three weeks after taking Nancy’s class. Mary was so right in encouraging me to take Nancy’s class. I love to piece and this free style piecing is showing up in many of my new quilts.

Statement: With my Birthday in late September and fall with all its colors, it is my favorite time of year. My long driveway has two rows of trees and is a splendor to come home to. Hand appliqué was done using my hand-dyed threads in a blanket stitch to mimic the serrated edge of the poplar leaves in my yard.

Statement: The Squares are about fitting in, staying in your place, fitting a mold or perhaps escaping and changing shape a little. Their colours are affected by their nieghbours as we are affected by those who touch us. I love stripes so made my own illregualar striped fabric by strip piecing my hand dyed and bleach resist fabrics. Making my own striped fabric was also an idea that was encouraged in Nancy Crow’s Class.
