I saw Nancy Bergman's work long before I met her. I found it to
be both lovely and thoughtful. When I met Nancy I was not surprised
to find that she is very much like the art she produces. An important
feature of her work is its narrative quality. The images convey
a story about the things that Nancy finds important or beautiful
including her home and family. Nancy is also a devoted teacher.
She derives great pleasure from sharing her |
knowledge
with others. She excels at encouraging experimentation. I hope
you will enjoy seeing some of the recent work of this award winning
quilt artist, my friend, Nancy Bergman.

Nancy Bergman - Artist statement:
I have dabbled in a number of art forms including painting, but
found that creating works using fabric was the most satisfying
to me. After I retired as an educator in 1997, I adopted the art
quilt as a medium for expressing myself artistically.
Inspired by the beautiful Lake of the Woods area where I live,
it was only natural that water would be a major influence in
my work. In 2004, in my first solo show,” The Beauty of
Ice”, I tried to capture, in a series of landscape, pictorial
and abstract art quilts, the remarkable reflective qualities
of water and ice.
Using photographs or drawing for inspirations, I have created
a number of pictorial quilts. It’s important to me that
each one of these quilts tells a story and has an emotional
impact on the viewer.
I love to teach! Teaching others some of my new experimental
methods of constructing quilts gives me great satisfaction.
My challenge is to encourage my students to discard their traditional
restrictive way of thinking and encourage them to express themselves.

This
composition was inspired by a photograph taken by a
friend. It immediately invoked childhood memories of
family times in Florida. My sister, Lynn, and I loved
to sit at the water’s edge, reveling in the heat
of the sun and the sight and sound of the surf. We giggled
as the waves broke over our legs, swirled around our
arms and tickled our backs. I used my original technique,
Zapplique™, on this quilt.
