I am pleased to introduce you to Pamela Allen. I first saw Pamela's
work at a CQA National Juried Show. I was captivated by her images
and the rich detail of her work. Pamela is a wonderful artist
whose sense of humour and fun make me laugh. However, her quirky
images often contain serious messages. What a perfect combination!
Pamela has
been a full time artist for 24 years. She resides in Kingston,
ON. Her work has |
been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She teaches
throughout Canada and the United States. I hope you will enjoy
seeing her work.

Pamela Allen - Artist statement:
I was a painter for many years and often found myself anxious
and self-doubting. The cure was to spend time laying in other
media to ease the tension. I had the idea that this was temporary
therefore I wasn't as neurotic about the final result. Lo and
behold this seemed to be the key to relaxing into a much more
personal style and wider subject matter ... more meaningful
to me. I became much more productive and was having a lot more
fun too. Funnily enough, as I look over the whole 20 years of
work there seems to be a common thread throughtout despirt ethe
apparent jumps from one medium to another. Since 2001, I'm working
mainly with fabric constructions. I feel as if I have arrived
at the artform that suits me perfectly ... even though as first
I could barely thread a needle. I now LOVE going to work each
day.

I
use everyday events as subject matter and don't worry
too much whether they are important universal themes.
I believe we all share similar relationships, trials and
joys so that my work may very well resonate for others.
My best friend and I have been visiting every Wednesday
afternoon for 30 years now. We share our lives, sip wine
and solve the big global issues! This is a celebration
of that long and close relationship.

I
was entering a show whose theme was wine related. At
the same time I had always wanted to incorporate into
my work, grape vines as they are depicted in ancient
Egyptian paintings. I love the sinous quality of the
fruit on the vine, and wanted the figure to look as
if she was REALLY enjoying her tipple!

I
was moved to explore my more political/feminist side
with this one. I am commenting on woman who despite
having been liberated from many unfair assumptions,
is still closely watched perhaps by a less than well
informed society.
