Coreen Zerr

Colleen Zerr
I am pleased to introduce my friend Coreen Zerr. Coreen is a dynamic, fun-loving woman whose love of nature is evident in her work. I first met Coreen when I was living on Gabriola Island during my husband's sabbatical. She welcomed me into a weekly sewing group and included me in many activities. Her warmth and enthusiasm were always evident. Over the years I have watched Coreen grow and develop into an award winning quilt artist

and teacher. She has employeed her great organizational skills in promoting quilting on Vancouver Island as well as in her teaching. I am delighted to tell you about Coreen. I hope you will enjoy her work.

Coreen Zerr - Artist statement:
I have always worked creatively with fabric, having taught myself to sew my own clothes as a girl. In 1991 I discovered quilting and learned the traditional methods by hand. Those lessons taught me patience and precision in my construction techniques. A local guild challenge in 1993 inspired me to create my first original landscape and so began my true passion.

Living and photographing on picturesque Vancouver Island furnishes me with exquisite natural images. I constantly experiment with new techniques and products to incorporate reality into my quilts. I want to draw my viewer into the scene to experience and enjoy the beauty that surrounds me.

My second passion, which I find so rewarding, is teaching and encouraging students to find their own paths and discover the artist within themselves on their quilting journey.

This strip pieced and collage landscape is typical of Vancouver Island beauty. This triptych is one of 5 landscapes, commissioned by St. Philips By The Sea Anglican Church in Lantzville, B.C.

Vivid memories of my childhood, growing up on the prairies, provided the inspiration for these larger than life Tiger Lilies. Now the lush green of my coastal home provides the setting for these enticing blooms.

The idea for this piece came from a photograph I took at Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island. I used Katie Pasquini-Masopast's technique of fractured landscapes to execute the dreamlike feeling of fairyland. The heavy woods and moss like atmosphere create the illusion that perhaps fairies really do exist!
