Judy Villett

Judy Villett
I am pleased to introduce my friend, Judy Villett. My introduction to Judy came by way of a newspaper article in the mid-1970's. it described her ethereal cloud wallhangngs as art. It was many years before we met in person. Through all that time I have admired Judy's work.

In addition to her art work Judy developed an innovative and comprehensive teaching

program. Her courses on colour theory are highly regarded throughout the country. The success of that program grew when she became the Program Coordinator at the Earthly Goods quilt shop in Edmonton.

Judy's work been shown in juried and solo exhibitions in England, Japan, USA, and Canada. She traveled across Canada and the USA teaching, lecturing, and judging. Judy is a member of the Fibre Art Network, a Western Canadian textile co-operative. She is also an active member of fibreEssence, a co-operative textile gallery in Vancouver.

I hope you will enjoy seeing the following examples of her work.

Judy Villett - Artist statement:
I have been wrapped up in quilts all my life! I was nurtured in the snowy Alberta foothills by three generations of family quilters, including one grandfather. My childhood was full of needlework and natural beauty. I think my love for quilting has been a genetic trait as well as a necessity.

My formal art education began at the University of Alberta in the Fine Arts program. Later, I learned to silkscreen on fabric and decided to add quilting to my designs. Combining traditional technique and contemporary design was a breakthrough discovery for me, and it led to a lifetime passion for the tactile quality and the multidimensional aspects of cloth. I continue to develop my skills by attending workshops across North America.

My work now combines multiple techniques usually beginning with commercially produced fabrics that may be stenciled, painted, embellished, pieced, appliquéd and then finally machine quilted. My inspirations are the play of light and dark, the power of colour, and the textures of the world that I walk in.

Having recently moved to Vancouver from Edmonton, I am excited about the new city, landscapes and connections with a vibrant art community. More importantly, I continue to enjoy the magical cloth connection that binds me to colleagues, art lovers, and students, who all respond so positively to the fabric medium that I love.

Fall Back is a celebration of the seasons. It is a tribute to my first fall in Vancouver after one long year of summer in Hawaii. A wild variety of printed two-inch squares was composed to catch the movement of light and colour in the rich forest canopy. Tree trunks were painted after the squares were sewn together, allowing some leaves to remain and covering many. Quilting lines add texture and unify the seasonal elements.

Moonlight etches cresting waves with luminous green in this tribute to a perfect tropical evening. A sheltered beach at Pokai Bay on the leeward side of Oahu is far from city lights. The Big Dipper hangs upside down, glittering with a few hand stitches added to seven specially placed crystals. Quilted details add to the story. A multitude of five-pointed stars fill the sky. Hidden turtle eggs nestle in the dark sand. Human footprints disappear into the sea. This is a postcard to me as a reminder of a wonderful women's retreat weekend during a year in Hawaii.

This powerful sky began as the background for many vees of flying geese seen over the Canadian prairie just as evening and a spring storm descended. The sky took over, with a special collection of large scale prints cut into 3" squares and visually blended on a design wall to create the illusion of light. "Transience" was designed and constructed during my first winter in Vancouver. There was a period of almost one month with no sun, when every break in the clouds was precious. It is a very symbolic piece for me: day to night, winter to spring, light to dark, clear to storm, warm to cold, prairie to coast…..changes in nature and the human condition.
