Her Grannie taught her to knit and embroider. She also learned cross-stitching, crochet, tatting and rug hooking along the way. It is no surprise that Kim eventually studied dressmaking and tailoring. She began her exploration of quilting in 1992 when she began taking classes. Today Kim is a prolific and skilled quilter who has recently added longarm quilting to her list of proficiencies. I hope you will enjoy getting to know Kim and her work.

Kim Caskey - Artist statement:
I love to create. I love to manipulate soft fabrics, delicious colors, intricate patterns and textures. I love the excitement as each step in the creation process unfolds another surprise. I have learned to draw with fabric and thread – this is my outlet. I feel such a sense of peace and tranquility when floating across the top of an interestingly pieced quilt; I’m in the “zone”.
My journey has not been a solitary one. I have learned so much from others in my 20+ years quilting. Studying from the experts –always looking up to these “original artists” – I am constantly inspired to create exciting, dynamic quilts. Learning from Master Quilters has challenged me to go beyond traditional designs and develop into the quilter and creator I am today. I am so grateful for their mentorship.
Another path of my quilt journey is my shared studio space with other quilt artists. This move from the solitude of my basement home studio has garnered a unique sense of camaraderie and professional companionship. The energy in the studio is very different from my home, allowing ideas to be shared and discussed, a place to offer support and receive it, and an environment that is conducive to focused creation.
I began 2010 with a conscious and clear intention to take a firm root in the art quilt world. My quilt journey took a major jump forward with the purchase of a long arm quilting machine mid-year and it continues into the digital world with the creation of a brand new website. My learning - and teaching - continues in many classrooms and I feel a rush of excitement when I look into the future of quilting.
