I am pleased to introduce Sharon Stoneman. Sharon is an art quilter whose current work reflects her costal environment. She lives on Vancouver Island. I met Sharon several years ago at a Fibre Art Network retreat. I immediately liked her and wanted to spend more time with this talented and charming woman. I hope you will enjoy looking at her work.

Sharon Stoneman - Artist statement:
I began quilting more than twenty years ago because I wanted to decorate my home. But quilting turned out to be so much more than a matter of decorating for me! It has become a way for me to express myself. Colour - texture - pattern... quilting has given me many tools to explore the world and my place in it.
In my evolution as an artist I have come to appreciate the importance of limits. Given a world of choices setting parameters has provided a structure for me to play within. I am currently exploring the point where lines become shapes, using a constrained palette with mostly solid fabrics. I am enjoying expressing emotion through line and colour.
When I sit down to work I never really know what will happen, but I’m always surprised and energized by what the conversation between my heart and hands produces.

| The Linearity series looks at lines, and at the point when lines become shapes. Earlier pieces in the series were large in scale, but number 4 was an opportunity to investigate smaller lines and shapes. I had fun stacking and turning the lines, making them into shapes and not shapes. Line after line of stitching adds another level of playing with lines to the work. |

Drop Fault was created for the Fibre Art Network invitational exhibit Geophysical. I was interested in the rhythm of the strata found in sedimentary rocks, and how under great geologic pressures those strata could shift and fracture. |
