Kristin Miller

kristin millerCapes are meant to conceal, yet they are highly noticeable garments. Given the very long history of capes cloaking the human form, they are also symbolic garments wherein the inner person is revealed.

From the animal skin slung over the caveman’s shoulder, to the wicked villain’s billowing cape, to the Queen’s royal robe or Batman’s elegant regalia, we read great meaning in these garments.

Perhaps this is why I chose caped figures to represent certain aspects of myself that I usually keep private and within.

Worry Birds Cape:
Worry seems to swoop in like a dark shadow.
Worry picks and pecks at my thoughts, scratches at my memories.
Worry pulls my feelings to shreds.

Why do I brood so incessantly?
“Worrying away at things” is more than a figure of speech.

Worry is how I incubate new ideas and hatch solutions,
how I push problems from my nest and see answers take flight.

Balance Cape:
Balance is a verb, not a noun.
It is something I must do.

Like a gyroscope, I spin and wobble,
seeking the stillness at the center of motion.

Where I am heading is where I need to go.

Exuberance Cape:
Bright colours
Fierce delight
Let it loose
Chase shadows out of sight
